INTRODUCTION OF
SMALL DAMS REGION SINDH HYDERABAD
EMPOWERING AGRICULTURE THROUGH RAIN WATER CONSERVATION

INTRODUCTION OF SMALL DAMS
In order to tackle the impending scarcity of water in rain fed / barani areas i.e Khirthar Hills & Thar Desert, the Irrigation Department, Government of Sindh, was established the Small Dams Region Sindh, Hyderabad during the year 2006-07 for the construction of Small Dams on untapped potential sites.
The Small Dams Regions is comprising on the 01 No. Circle, 03 NOS. Divisions namely:
i) Small Dams Division Kohistan-I Dadu,
ii) Small Dams Division Kohistan-II Jamshoro,
iii) Small Dams Division Nagarparkar @ Mithi.
The khirthar range and Thar desert is comprising on 49.32% area of Sindh which is almost half area of the province. This area is completely depending on rainfall. Previously, the precious rain water was wasted without being proper utilization due to non-availability of Small Dams.
Details of total area of sindh province is as under.
Total Area of Sindh Province | 57407 sq-miles (140914 sq-km²). |
i) Irrigation based Land | 43.81% (25150 sq-miles). |
ii) Tidal flood Plains | 5.43% (3117 sq-miles). |
iii) Riverine | 1.43% (821 sq-miles). |
iv) Khirthar Range | 16.40% (9415 sq-miles). |
v) Thar Desert | 32.92% 18898 sq-miles). |
Total | 49.32% |
Prior to initiative of Small Dams
The local people of Thar Desert, Lower, Central and Upper Kohistan were living in miserable condition, nomadic life and generally compelled to move Barrage areas with their live stock to earn livelihood for themselves & their livestock, when there was drought.
The Small Dams Region Sindh, Hyderabad, has completed so far 113 Small Dams. Whereas, 18 Nos. Small Dams and 09 No. Tarries are also On-going under PSDP & various ADP schemes.
- These Small Dams are became effective model for poverty alleviation in their respective command areas and good impact has been noticed.
- After construction of Small Dams, the migration of local people to the Barrage Command is reduced at significant level and the trend for permanent settlement have been established in Thar Desert & Kohistan areas
- Prior to construction of Small Dams, the sub-soil water level was depleted at alarming level of 200 ft to 250, which is now recharged upto 120 ft to 150 ft, where Small Dams are constructed.
- The already constructed Dams are producing optimum result , the people are getting advantage of availability of water for drinking purpose for human beings, as well as live stock and even it is being used for cultivation of their crops, vegetables, fodder etc.
SELECTION & DESIGN CRITERIA
Selection Criteria of Small Dams Sites
- The Sites of Small Dams have been selected by reputed consultants through Survey, Investigation and after Determining the Viability & other potential benefits of the Small Dams.
Design Criteria
- The Ogge Spillway with upstream face vertical and downstream face at slope have been designed as per engineering parameters and site conditions. The temperature reinforcement to control the shrinkage cracks is provided in weir, stilling basin and upstream and downstream aprons. whereas, the wing walls are designed as reinforced cantilever walls (Cross Section attached).
